In honor of Matt McCall’s newest creation, BrInG iT aRoUnD tOwN, we’re talking to with the head brewer to discuss the beer and his inspiration for the Gose-style ale. The beer will release on Saturday, July 6.
Can you give some backstory on the inspiration for this beer?
To be honest, Spongebob memes are my favorite and I use them probably way too much. I’ve also always loved the show and still do. With that in mind, and with the brewery being so close to the water, I knew a Spongebob beer had to happen!
So Spongebob Squarepants is a children’s show, right? Do you still watch it?
I think it was intended to be a children’s show, but I know lots of adults that watched it and continue to watch it given the writing and themes. I don’t really watch much TV outside of sports and Jeopardy, but if I happen to be bored on a Saturday I’ll still throw it on to insert a few laughs into my day.
Do you have a favorite episode or moment on the show?
Definitely when Spongebob is teaching Patrick how to blow bubbles and does his “bring it around town” dance, hence the name of the beer!
If you could have a beer with one of the characters from Spongebob, who would it be and why?
Mermaidman, of course!
Why a Pineapple Gose? Does that relate to the show in some way?
Well Spongebob lives in a pineapple under the sea, so doing a beer with pineapple and sea salt just made too much sense to me!
You seem to get a lot of your beer inspiration based on nostalgia. Do you have any other fun/weird ideas in the works?
Let’s just say, “where we’re going we don’t need roads…”
